ANIMETAPHOR
The animetaphor, or metaphor of animal, addresses the gap and ambiguity between the human and the animal. Animals are not tangible and knowable the way that humans are. They expose the limits of describing things with human language. 1 The animal of the animetaphor “draws the worldbuilding subject towards an impossible convergence with the limits of the world, towards a metaphysics of metaphor. The magnetic animal erases the limits of the metaphor, effecting an economy of the figure that is metaphoric rather than metamorphic. It forces the transformation of the figure.” 2 The animal becomes the vanishing point for the human, it disfigures representation by transforming the figure into flesh. 3 Searching for the boundaries of the animal makes one consider the boundaries of the human. The fact that both have boundaries implies that they may be flimsy in places. Since boundaries can be permeated – can the human and animal contaminate each other? POST/TRANS/ANIMAL suggests utilizing both metaphor and metamorphosis.
